More Rights for Immigrants who are Victims of Crime

More Rights for Immigrants who are Victims of Crime

In order for a victim of crime to be provided services, they often have to present verification that they in fact have been victimized. A police report is the most common way to provide the needed documentation.  Yet, in the past, immigrants have been unable to obtain these reports because they could not provide verification of identity to the issuing police department.

Starting in 2014, victims cannot be asked to provide proof of lawful residence in order to obtain these documents. (Government Code Section 6254.30.) Any state or local agency which requires identification for release of police reports must accept various identification types regardless of whether it is domestic or foreign.
